Membership information
There are a number of steps to becoming a member of the VVCC.
- Step 1:
- Accept the reality that the VVCC is a figment of our collective imagination. We have
this fine website and a fairly active mailing list to coordinate the activities of
like-minded individuals in the Toronto area. We are each responsible for
ourselves: there is no club insurance, there are no official leaders. We are not responsible for your safety.
By joining a trip you are assessing yourself as capable of looking after
yourself. This means that we will take no more responsibility for your safety on a
trip than if we just met you at that moment on the river. You and every one of us are
individuals making individual choices and responsible for our individual safety. If you're looking
for someone to take that responsibility you're better off with a commercial outfitter
or a real club.
I'm sorry if that seems hard, but that is unfortunately the world we live in
and we don't wish to be embroiled in it any more than we can help.
- Does the preceding mean that we're a bunch of curmudgeonly soloists? Absolutely not. We like paddling with each other
and sharing food, boats and tent space. It means we've got a good thing going and we don't want it spoiled either
by people who think this is something it isn't or by lots of forms or lawsuits.
- Step 2:
- If you've survived that first step, the next is to
send a personal profile of yourself from a paddling perspective to
.
Tell us what kind of experience you have, what
kind of paddling you want to do, and anything else
you think the others might find interesting about you. There's no vote on
your membership in this non-existant organization, this is a self-selecting process.
At this point you'll be added to the list and introduced
with the profile you send. Congratulations! You're in!
- Step 3:
- There is no step three.
- Step 4:
- Sign in to our website as a member. You'll receive your username and temporary password after step two.
Once you log on with your temporary password you'll have to pick a permanent one and log in again. After that you should
have to log in only rarely -- the site will remember you if you ask it to.
After all that it's time to plan, paddle and talk about it.
